Tarotcast Week of August 6, 2017

The Talking Skull, above, and the sculptures below are by the artist Meta Vaux Warrick Fuller. Fuller is considered to be a forerunner of the Harlem Renaissance. After art school in Philadelphia she moved to Paris and became a protégé of Auguste Rodin. In Paris, her artistic ability was nurtured and exalted.  However, on her return to the US her art was considered “domestic,” and she was shunned by the Philadelphia art scene. ( I am not exactly sure what “domestic” means but a polite way of being racist and sexist in the early 1900’s in the Northeast.)

Fuller’s work was not limited to the reflection of the African American experience. For instance, she made a religious sculpture annually, but many of her pieces were political in nature and some did express the African American experience at the turn of the 1900 century.  I see that sculpture above as not only a way Meta spoke to the world about a certain people’s history but also how she understood and beautiful articulated the complexity of emotions of a human questioning death.

P.S. Remember, signs with * it’s a big week for you.

*Aries – High Priest –  Last week, The Star card advised you to slow down and do some much needed healing and breathing. This week the High Priest is challenging you to continue the intentions of last week, but to do so you will need to create boundaries and structure in your life. Remember the big rule in air flight: put your oxygen mask on yourself before putting it on others.

Taurus – Three of Wands – You know last week when the Queen of Swords asked you how to make you your deepest desire happen? Well, you get another week to work on that. Last week you tried to get what you wanted done, and you found that you didn’t have the resources, including time. The Three of Wands is giving you another week to set up the circumstances to get those deepest desires to sail into port with more ease.

Tarotcast for Week of July 30, 2017

The above collage art is from May Wilson‘s Ridiculous Portrait series. May Wilson left school in ninth grade and went to work as a stenographer. By age 20 she had gotten married and became a housewife in the suburbs of Baltimore Maryland. With her children grown and in her forties, she decided to take a few correspondence courses in the arts which launched her art career.

In 1956, she was introduced to Ray Johnson and became part of his mail art circle. But it wasn’t until  after her divorce at age 61 and a move to New York City did she blossom again. Through her art work and famous parties she became known as the Grandma Moses of the Underground. She is an inspiration that at any age we can recreate who we are if we do not take ourselves too seriously.

P.S. Remember, signs with * it’s a big week for you.  With your tarotcast are images from May Wilson’s Snowflake and Ridiculous Portrait series.

*Aries – The Star – The Star card is here this week to get you all to slow down and do some much needed healing and breathing. When we slow down we notice the “simpler” things in life that are essential and how amazing they are. For example, the stars are heavenly bodies that can bring us awe, and in the same instance we are made of the same elements. As Carl Sagan said The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of starstuff. So your challenge this week is to be as amazed at your existence as you are in the stars’.

Taurus – Queen of Swords – The Queen of Swords is the card of self-truth and realization. This card challenges you to answer honestly – what do you want to happen this week. What is your deepest desire? Rest, happiness, love? And then she challenges you to strategize how to make that happen. Go to bed at a decent hour, make time to hang with friends or family, or make a romantic meal (even if it just with your cat or dog – I can guarantee they will give you some love if you share your dinner with them.)

Tarotcast for Week of July 16, 2017

The above fiber art is made by textile artist Claire Moynihan. She displays these tiny works of art like traditional entomologist do in display cases; however her categorizations of bug balls and moth balls are more humorous.

The study of bugs or entomology dates back to the rise of agriculture.  However, the focused scientific study didn’t start until the 16th century.   And it wasn’t until the early 1800’s that it started to have more participants. Entomology became a wide spread hobby among the European middle and upper class. As children we all have done some form of entomology. We all have gotten down on our hands and knees to study the hustle and bustle of an ant hill, watch a fly clean its face, or run after the fluttering butterfly.

P.S. Remember, signs with * it’s a big week for you.

Aries – Six of Pentacles – The Six of Pentacles teaches you about the ripples of karma. This week everything you give comes back to you three-fold, this includes the good and the bad. This card reminds you karmicly to be more Gilda the Good Witch then Wicked Witch of the West, or at the very least not to send out the flying monkeys when you get upset.

Taurus – Four of Swords – The last couple of weeks have been full of things to do and information to gather. This week the Four of Swords is challenging you to slow that way down. You need time to mull over all that has gone on, your body needs rest, and your soul needs space. So take some advice from the Dalai Lama – Sleep is the best mediation.

Tarotcast for Week of July 2, 2017

Humpback WhalesThis picture reminds me of the Creation of Adam by Michelangelo. Whales have always been god like to me. Since first grade, when I read The Whales Go By a Dr. Seuss I Can Read book, I was awestruck with their size, and when you looked into their eyes they looked so all knowing. Their connection with spirituality heightened when my second grade teacher played Rodger Payne’s Songs of the Humpback Whale. The sounds were and are still so ethereal. Whales became one of my totem animals from then on.

Whales are grouped together with dolphins and porpoises. Because of new genetic research, whales are now being grouped under Cetartiodactyla or even- toed ungulates. This group includes cattle, sheep, pigs, llamas, camel and deer, to name a few. However, their closet living land relative is the hippopotamus. Isn’t it amazing the variety of paths evolution or even our lives can take. That we all came from a one celled organism that started in the sea, and can end up back in that same ocean trying to re-connect.

P.S. Remember, signs with * it’s a big week for you.

Aries – Four of Wands – This week stay close to home. The Four of Wands forecasts that your heart is where your home is. Your challenge is how can you make your home a place of rest and bliss. However, if have to leave home, make sure to find a place and time where you can put up our feet and breathe a sigh of relief.

*Taurus – Hierophant – This week you need to put some structure back into your life. The Hierophant is a task master. He asks what do you really need to get done this week. Think of this energy like your personal trainer – wanting you to be the most productive and efficient you. And his advice to do so is to create your ideal schedule, prioritize what needs to get done, and just do it.

Tarotcast for Week of June 11, 2017

Julia Cameron Photography

The photographer Julia Margaret Cameron was born June 11, 1815 – 202 years ago. She started taking photographs late in life, at the age of 49. At the time, people accused her of slovenliness and bad photography. Instead of the hyper-realism expected in this budding art form, she used a soft focus, allowed her subjects to move, often portrayed them in legendary themes, and played with the development process. This is typical of air signs; they do their best work outside of pre-existing structures. To deal with air signs think about them like the wind – without boundaries. When you enjoy the wind the most is when it unexpectedly glides across your skin on a hot summers day.

P.S. Remember, signs with * it’s a big week for you.

Aries – Three of Swords – Last week was about feeding your strength. That was preparation for this week. The Three of Swords’ lesson is about getting rid of or refusing to accept thoughts that hurt you emotionally. This week, watch out for your thoughts piercing others or for someone else being passive-aggressive with your heart. Your challenge is to dislodge or dodge the negative darts thrown at you.

Taurus – Ace of Pentacles – You get back to work this week with the Ace of Pentacles. This is a great time to start a project, and get your hands dirty. The challenge with this card is that you have so many options that it is hard to pick just one. It is important that you pick just one.

Hiroshi Shinno insects 01

These imaginary insects are made by the artist Hiroshi Shinno. He casts the outer petal-and-leaf like structures in resin, paints them with vibrant acrylic paint and then applies them to a brass base. Even though I have read how he does it I still wonder, how in the heck did he do these? They are the size of a leaf,. and you can see from the picture that some of the pieces are almost translucent. People are amazing. Or really, nature is so amazing that we in one of our highest forms of expression trying to copy it.

P.S. Remember, signs with * it’s a big week for you.

*Aries – Strength – It is all about strength this week. Your challenge is to identify the things that make you stronger and feed them. If exercise makes you feel stronger, do it. If resting makes you stronger, get your eight hours and nap if you need to. If love makes you stronger, spend time with people who love you and who you love.

Taurus – Queen Of Cups – Last week, you practiced balancing work and play. Now, the Queen of Cups is begging you to add more play, by reconnecting with love and beauty. Your challenge is to spend as much time in the land of Ahhhhhh and Wow. The more your heart is open to the wonders in this land the more you will receive.

Gemini – Six of Swords – Last week, The Star heralded that your new year would be filled with the gifts of enlightenment and healing. This week the Six of Swords challenges you to get some solitude and think about the areas of your life where you want healing and enlightenment in the coming year. As always with this card, I advise you do this around water, and ocean, river, ha even a pool.

Cancer – Queen of Cups and Three of Pentacles – So remember that juggling you need to get better at? Well, you are still working at juggling this week. The Three of Pentacles is challenging you to add another ball to the two you have been working with. The Queen of Cups says that part of your balance problem is that you haven’t been working in enough fun, so this new ball needs to be fun. The key, and paradox, is that fun shouldn’t be work.

Leo – King of Pentacles – The King of Pentacles’ focus is on pushing projects forward. He is the doer of the deck. His lesson is to get hands on. This is not a week of the mind. The one challenge with this King is that when he does something he is on maximum drive, and this includes being lazy. Remember it is great to be driven, but don’t be extreme.

Virgo – Ace of Swords – The Ace of Swords is advising you to make a decision or to come to a new way of thought. The Aces always foretell a new beginning and this one starts in your mind. Your only challenge is to stay focused yet open.

Libra – Six of Wands – Another good week for you all with the Six of Wands. This card indicates victory and completion. The challenge is identifying and then focusing only on projects where the goal is easily attainable. Anything that does not fit into that category can wait, because those projects are too convoluted or blocked right now. Meaning no matter how hard you push, they just won’t get done anyway.

Scorpio – Five of Pentacles – This week you are missing resources that you need to move forward. For example, you can’t find anyone around to help you, you don’t have enough money to cover an expense, or that piece you need to finish the puzzle is nowhere to be found. The lesson to learn with the Five of Pentacles is that this is a short lived shortage – this too shall pass. The challenge is to fortify yourself with hope. Things will work out, just not this week. PS: You may also literally lose something – like car keys or credit card. So put your car keys in one place all this week.

Sagittarius – Ace of Wands – The Ace of Wands is wanting you to do something that brings awe and amazement into your life. This card advises that this activity or thing should be something new. The only challenge with this card for Sagittarians is that the combination creates a lot of fire energy, so be safe on your adventures. Buckle up and wear a helmet when required.

*Capricorn – Lovers – The Lovers is all about collaboration. Spend this week with others bouncing off ideas, and philosophizing about how to fix the world’s problems or how to make the divine manifest into the world. This week is big and lofty. To get your imagination and intellect to soar you will need partners. Also, realize you will have different partners for different things. So your challenge is to be fully focused and engaged with the person you are with at the moment.

Aquarius – Four of Wands – The Four of Wands’ lesson is around making a happy home. This card asks you to ponder, how do you make your home a happy place for you? Do you need to make food and invite loved ones over? To curl up on the couch, turn off all electronics and read for a day? Change the color palette? Remember to follow your heart, because your home is where your heart is.

Pisces – Knight of Wands and Two of Pentacles – The Two of Pentacles is back to remind you need more balance in your life. And the Knight of Wands is saying that your imbalance stems from you neglecting your creativity. Your challenge this week is to not only juggle work and family. Now you have to add “me time” in or you are going to lose your balance.

May light be on you, around you, and within you,

Nina

Tarotcast for the Week of May 28, 2017

embroidery

I grew up in the seventies when crafting was a big thing. Every summer we would pick a craft – macramé, leather work, making candles, making glasses out of wine bottles, or making pictures with things from the sea. My Mom’s big thing was ceramics and my Dad’s was making things out of leather. My grandmother did needle work but she gravitated more towards knitting. And as a kid I tried everything, but nothing really stuck until I got my first embroidery kit of a terrier’s face with one thread color and one stitch. I liked that embroidery added a silky texture and dimension to a picture. But what really amazed me was that something I used to fix the holes in my pants had the potential to become art.

Crafting in general has now had a resurgence with the DIY movement. And even though embroidery has had an high-art face since the seventies, it is now being recognized by museums and collectors as fine art instead of just arts and crafts. The images above and below represent artists of two generations, four countries and both sexes that use embroidery with photos in their art work. Maria Ikonomopoulou from the Netherlands, Julie Cockburn from the UK, Laura Mckellar from Australia, and Jose Romussi from Chile.

P.S. Remember, signs with * it’s a big week for you.

Aries – Ace of Pentacles – The Ace of Pentacles continues to call you to action. As with all Aces, this marks a new beginnings. This week this card is challenging you to begin manifesting something new into your life. This can be as simple as spending time in your garden planting flowers, herbs or veggies, or making something in your workshop.

Taurus – Seven of Pentacles – This week the Seven of Pentacles advises you to dig in and get some work done. However, the challenge is all work and no play makes Jack/Jill not happy. Spend this week honing your skill at focusing on what you are doing: when at work – work, and when at home – play.
