Tarot and Artcast for Aug 31-Sept 13

The artist highlighted for this Artcast is Jennifer Packer. On the surface one would say, Packer paints portraits and flowers, but how she portrays her images makes the viewer feel more by seeing less. This is embodied in one of her idioms: “I think about images that resist, that attempt to retain their secrets or maintain their composure, that put you to work…” What I love about Packer’s work is her ability to convey more with less. That her portrait can be almost monochromatic, but we walk away with a connection with the person being portrayed. Or perhaps it is the feeling of Packer’s perception about that person’s aura. Either way it is the connection that becomes the centerpieces of her work.

Your pondering: Packer said about her exhibition “Every Shut Eye Ain’t Asleep” at MOCA LA “I hope to make works that suggest how dynamic and complex our lives and relationships are.” On our path of learning how to human we must remember that most of our experiences with others are just glimpses into their life. That fellow commuter may be asleep or maybe just trying to keep the world out so they can keep their feelings in. Ultimately, we need to remember that all the people we meet have stories behind them, all unique but also all dealing with the same range of human emotions. We should never take for granted or overlook that that person across from us – you don’t know them intimately – what they have dealt with – but you have felt what they have felt at some point. One of the great human paradoxes is that we are all unique and the same.

Solar System highlights

We start the week with the moon in Sagittarius – great for exploring but hard to get work moving. On Tuesday the moon moves into Capricorn – now work week begin. Thursday it is in Aquarius– great for innovation and outside of the box thinking. And on Sunday September 7^th we have a full moon in Pisces – this is a dreamy full moon good for creativity. Then Tuesday September 9^th the moon is in Aries – great for getting those dreams out of the ether and into the material plane. On Thursday September 11^th the moon is in Taurus – ground your emotions. Then we begin the weekend with the moon in Gemini – communication becomes the focus.

Mercury is still in Leo until September 3^rd, finishing off our 11-week course in expressing ourselves with the caveat that we don’t shade others’ shine while we spread our own light. Then it moves into Virgo having us work on making our communication efficient and clear. Mars is Scorpio until November 4^th. This aspect is a perfect time to work on our passion projects. The artist highlighted for this Artcast is Carla Accardi. Accardi is one of the major figures of Italian formalism. One of the hallmarks of formalist art theory is the idea that the work of art should be experienced in itself, and not in relation to anything else. Her calligraphic abstractions and artistic explorations utilize the hybridization of geometric and gestural painting. Accardi used both traditional canvas as well as a material called Sicofoil (a transparent plastic) to produce her paintings. Thus having the viewer more clearly see the paint and the gestures of the painter.

Your pondering: Where do you box in your talents? We often try to put science and art into separate and often opposing categories. Being misled by the saying of left versus right brained people. New research using brain scans of mathematicians and artists while they are working has demonstrated that both sides of the brain work in tandem during creative and quantitative tasks alike. As Accardi says about her inspirations for painting: “I was following two approaches: one focused on a scientific biological perspective, with growing and shrinking amoebas. The other approach was more geometric, with work that was sharper…”

Solar System highlights

We start the week with the moon in Gemini – the focus is communication. On Tuesday the moon moves into Cancer – self-care is top priority. On Thursday it is in Leo – your time to shine. It then moves into Virgo on Saturday which is also a new moon – great to start organizing or cleaning projects. Then Tuesday August 26^th the moon is in Libra – focus on relationships and balance. Tarot and Artcast for Aug 3-16

The artist highlighted is Ledelle Moe. Moe mostly works in sculpture and installations using dirt, concrete and steel. Her pieces seem to hold a presence. They ground us. Maybe it is the size for some pieces but also her choice of material and process is palpable. In her words: “I have been exploring notions of monumentality and the human form through a series of sculpted figures. Created with a process that begins with the digging and gathering of soil from various locales and progresses in the studio through such actions as welding, casting, modeling, and carving, I create these figures in order to open up narratives that speak through both image and materiality…. Also, in play are what have been recurring themes in my work. These are issues of permanence and impermanence, location and dislocation, and place and displacement.”

Your pondering: We are in the midst of summer. Somedays seem to lazily stretch on-and-on and others are a flash of sunlight and heat. Time has been on my mind a lot lately. So, this statement, by Moe about her installation Congregation (a series of small concrete heads where she collected sand, dirt and detritus from places she has visited- See Sagittarius below for pic), struck a chord with me and maybe you would like to ponder it too. “Time is a very interesting shape, it folds, and it weaves and it’s a wave. And sometimes a circle but its definitely not a line.”

Tarot and Art-cast for July 6-19, 2025

The artist highlighted is Kawase Hasui. Kawase was famous for his landscape paintings and prints. He was part of the Shin-hanga (new prints) art movement in early 20^th century Japan. Shin-hanga artists incorporated the impression of light and the expression of individual moods. Kawase’s sunset landscapes and his choice of everyday scenes instead of famous landmarks show how he is capturing a mood more then highlighting the subject. He moved away from ukiyo-e traditions of emulating hand-drawn brushstrokes, seeking instead to “create works replete with creativity and rich with artistic quality, by avoiding enslavement to hand-drawn painting or old models”

Your pondering: Two ponderings around this art. Is your creativity or work stunted by an established norm? How can you change or focus on how your environment influences your mood?

Since the dogs had there day and June is Adopt a Cat month, the artist highlighted this Tarot and Artcast is Evgeniya Gor @evgenya.gor. One of the subjects she photographs is street cats. She explains: “most of the adorable animals in my photos are homeless.” Not only does she highlight these animals’ plight, but she also carries food to them and supports shelters by donating. She strives to show us not only the strays’ resilience amidst the harsh winters of Astana but also the vital role animals play in our lives – a way to connect with another living being.

Your pondering: We have four indoor pets, and a variety of hummingbird and bird feeders (which are also frequented by squirrels and chipmunks) in our yard. And this year I planted a hummingbird and butterfly garden to strengthen my stewardship and companionship with other beings of earth. The artist highlighted is Romare Bearden. He is a painter, collage and mix media artist. He is best known for his collages and Photostats. Throughout his career, he had practiced copying, redrawing, and reworking his own images. An extension of that are large-scale photo reproductions (called Photostats, after the machine used to make them) of these worked collages.

The results are significantly larger, in black and white, and flatter, with the edges of the distinct paper pieces muted. By doing this process to his collages he made his pieces occupy a larger part of the viewer’s space rather than being drawn into the details of the original collage. These reminds us that there is a broader aspect/perspective to any story or situation.

Your pondering: Bearden once said, “I really think that the art of painting is the art of putting something over something else.” Not only can this be applied to art, painting and collage, but it also can apply to the building of who we are. Our memories are applied layer upon layer to create our perspective and identity of who we are. Investigate your layers and then pull back and see what you have become because of them.
