Tarot and Artcast for Aug 17-30

The artist highlighted for this Artcast is Carla Accardi. Accardi is one of the major figures of Italian formalism. One of the hallmarks of formalist art theory is the idea that the work of art should be experienced in itself, and not in relation to anything else. Her calligraphic abstractions and artistic explorations utilize the hybridization of geometric and gestural painting. Accardi used both traditional canvas as well as a material called Sicofoil (a transparent plastic) to produce her paintings. Thus having the viewer more clearly see the paint and the gestures of the painter.

Your pondering: Where do you box in your talents? We often try to put science and art into separate and often opposing categories. Being misled by the saying of left versus right brained people. New research using brain scans of mathematicians and artists while they are working has demonstrated that both sides of the brain work in tandem during creative and quantitative tasks alike. As Accardi says about her inspirations for painting: “I was following two approaches: one focused on a scientific biological perspective, with growing and shrinking amoebas. The other approach was more geometric, with work that was sharper…”

Solar System highlights

We start the week with the moon in Gemini – the focus is communication. On Tuesday the moon moves into Cancer – self-care is top priority. On Thursday it is in Leo – your time to shine. It then moves into Virgo on Saturday which is also a new moon – great to start organizing or cleaning projects. Then Tuesday August 26^th the moon is in Libra – focus on relationships and balance. And we finish the two weeks with the moon in Scorpio on Thursday August 28^th– explore your passions.

Mercury is still in Leo until September 3^rd, but no longer retrograde. Finishing off our 11-week crash course in expressing ourselves with the caveat that we don’t shade others’ shine while we spread our own light. Mars is Libra until the 23^rd, having us work on collaboration and cooperation. Venus is in Cancer when cuddling and beauty rest become the precedent. Not to mention it is hanging with Jupiter, the planet of abundance so doubling the goodness for both planets.

Jupiter, the planet of abundance and growth, is in Cancer until June 2026. This placement is exalted, because Cancer boosts Jupiter’s positive aspects and vice versa. Jupiter creates more ease in our emotional growth, intuition, feeling nurtured as well as giving it. However, the two-fold challenge is that growth needs time to cultivate and may bring growing pains. So be kind and patient with others and yourself as we grow into our abundance. Saturn is in Aries until September 1^st for its first round of pumping up the energy levels. This aspect is about calibrating how you burn your “candle”, so that you don’t burn out while everything is on the move around us.

Lastly, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are in their new signs during August for a peek into what the next social cycle, possibilities and places that need changing. Saturn represents structures and institutions, and Aries is about new ways to do things. Uranus is the planet of revolution, freedom and innovation and Gemini is all things around the mind, information, and communication. Neptune represents our dreams and aspirations and in Aries how to make dreams real. For society and personally this is the time to investigate new ways of evolving. One walk away from anything even slightly dramatic. Do not engage. Or if you must interact then spiritually put on your toughest armor and use your intuition to navigate these turbulent waters. Logic does not work well in these situations, so if engaging – float like a butterfly and avoid stinging like a bee.

*Tower – The Muse of Destruction comes when something in your life is not working and needs a major over-haul. Take these next two weeks to take inventory on everything that is not working in your life. Literally write a list. And prioritize it from biggest to smallest/easiest to fix. Examples can be as simple as your toilet constantly running or as complex as your job sucking the life out of you. Then take the smallest easiest issue and fix it. And move up list as far as you can. Tarot and Art-cast for Jan 19 – Feb 1, 2025

The artist highlighted this tarotart-cast is Bernice Bing. Bing’s medium was paint and her mode was color and tone. Her paintings are big and bold. The viewer can see her fascination of the duality of light and dark, whether that was her landscape paintings or her later explorations of the unconscious world, Zen Buddhism and Chinese calligraphy. Abstraction as a practice gave her the ability to investigate her faceted self. Abstract art emerged primarily because artists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries wanted to break away from the traditional focus on realistically depicting the physical world, instead seeking to express emotions and ideas through color, line, and form, rather than recognizable imagery, leading to a movement that emphasized the inner experience and artistic interpretation over strict representation of reality.

Society and its constructs are often set in place to give us meaning and a sense of community. It is very human characteristic to want to define, categorize, create structures to explain and predict outcomes. But it also can constrain growth. This is the beauty of abstraction when we or aspects don’t fit into just one box we can explore without constraints.

Solar System highlights

We begin with the Moon in Libra – relationships are on the forefront. On Wednesday it moves into Scorpio – time to let something go. Then on Friday it moves into Sagittarius – spend the weekend exploring. On Monday the 27^th it moves into Capricorn – focus on work. Then on Wednesday the 29^th the moon moves into Aquarius – work on innovating something to the next level. And lastly for the weekend the lunation moves into Pisces – daydreaming and intuition is key.

Mercury is still in Capricorn until January 26^th, having us working on being efficient and succent with our conversation. Though be careful about coming off as too bossy or harsh. Motto: “I know things, but I don’t know everything.” The it moves into Aquarius. Mercury is now about socializing and innovating the way we communicate. Mars is retrograde again in Cancer until February 23^rd, 2025. So once again action moves sideways not in a straight line. But this is our second opportunity to find new and better avenues then the obvious or easiest ones.

Venus is now in Pisces until Feb 3^rd. This aspect is lovely – a dreamy haze. Though be careful with this stop and go energy of Mars that you don’t just daydream the month away. There still is action needed but it is a meandering organic evolution of your concepts of beauty and harmony. And Venus will retrograde back into Pisces in the spring. So don’t stress, once things get moving you will have a second chance to come back to this growth.

Our longer aspects: Jupiter, the planet of abundance and growth, is in Gemini until June of 2025. This placement is here to help us work with opportunities to grow and succeed through intellectual, verbal, and written pursuits. However, we must also watch its challenging aspects: not following through, gossip, too much information and fickleness. Saturn is in Pisces until February 2026 teaching us how to be more fluid and inclusive in our structures. And lastly Pluto in Aquarius is still feeling very new. So is you are feeling wobbly, remember to take things slowly. We have lots of time with this aspect.

Happy Birth-month Sagittarians!

The artist this week is Emmi Whitehorse, a painter and printmaker. As a student in the late 1970s, E. Whitehorse joined the groundbreaking “Grey Canyon Group”, which was comprised of other contemporary Native American artists. Together, the group challenged beliefs placed on Indigenous-made art by utilizing modernist abstraction to express Indigenous themes and worldviews.

Throughout her forty-year career, E. Whitehorse has created abstract and meditative mixed-media paintings. Her main sources of inspiration come from the landscapes of the American southwest and her Navajo culture. She cites her grandmother, who was a traditional Navajo weaver, as one of her earliest art mentors. Her grandmother’s influence not only shaped how the artist viewed composition but also ingrained in her the Navajo philosophy of Hózhó, or balance. This philosophy has inspired the artist to make artworks that honor the aspirations of a harmonious balance between nature and humanity.

Your pondering for this week: For me ancestors and family are a big theme for the period from Halloween to the New Year. I go from Halloween honoring ancestors and people who have passed on to Turkey day spending it with family and friends in the present. Then onto Solstice where I celebrate letting go of the old and inviting in the new with friends and at times strangers that become new friends. In all these celebrations I try to honor the people in my life. How do you honor your ancestors, family, and friends; past, present and future?

The artist this week is Anne Ryan. Ryan (1889–1954) was an American Abstract Expressionist artist associated with the New York School. She began as a poet and novelist, then moved on to oil painting. By 1941 she encountered the New York City avant-garde when she joined the Atelier 17, a famous printmaking workshop in New York.

The prominent turning point in Ryan’s work occurred after the war, in 1948. She was 57 years old when she saw the collages of Kurt Schwitters at a gallery. That night she dedicated herself to this newly discovered medium. She started with words, scrapes of paper like Schwitters but moved onto a rich variety of fabrics and papers to achieve effects that are both calming and intimate. Ryan could see that collage like poetry conveys meaning in a compact space. Her work in this medium numbered over 400 pieces by the time of her death six years later.

Seven of Fire – The Muse of Climbing would like you to ponder what mountain are you climbing and why? Is it to get a better vantage point? Is it the challenge? Etc.… The important point to these forms of questioning is to find out if the exertion level is enough to get you to the summit. And if not, what resources do you need to help you reach it.

Ten of Fire – You are carrying a hefty load, and the Muse of Burdens asks you is this excess necessary at this moment? She challenges you to deal with the parts that are a priority whether it is an obligation or timing and put the rest down. For some things can wait or they are not your responsibility in the first place.

Ace of Air – All Aces are energies presented to begin something. This energy is about processing a new way of thought. The muses suggest the best way to gather intel into this is looking outside yourself first then change the dogma internally.

*Temperance – Moderation is key this week. Moderation is defined as “the avoidance of excess or extremes, especially in one’s behavior or political opinions.” But it can also be seen as the Middle Path in Buddhism “the avoidance of two extremes of practical life, namely, indulgence in sensual pleasures on the one hand and severe asceticism on the other.” The muses would like you to avoid the extremes this week like over the top self-indulgences or severe self-judgements.

Tarot and Art Forecast Week of Sept 4, 2022

The artist this week is Jane Lee. Lee is a painter that deconstructs painting and therefore the creation process. She works with the components that build a painting, the canvas or the thread that makes it, paper, the stretcher, the paint. Her painting exploration is Impasto to the ninth degree. Impasto is paint that stands up from the surface because of how it was applied or the quantity of paint.

She typical does not work with paint brushes but utensils around her house and her hands. She starts with a blank canvas and begins to layer it as she goes through the day. Then she peels or digs back into those layers exposing them. By exposing the layers, edges or decomposing the painting she makes the viewer ponder the process of creation, deconstruction, and then reconstruction. Lee has us pull back our own process of layering our emotions and experiences as we walk through our day. That we do not truly know what the day holds. The knowing comes when we reflect and dig back into our life. When Tan Siuli asked her about how she came to this process from traditional painting Lee said “I asked, what makes painting a painting? How can I create art in an unconventional way that is more related to daily life, that can allow me to be free, to celebrate and to embrace unexpected process, as in life?

Your pondering for the week: Can you walk through life excited about the unexpected? And when you do reflect back, can you reconstruct your life into a piece of art, a thing of beauty?

Solar Systems Highlights

The Moon starts in Capricorn – work and checking things off your to-do list. Then on Wednesday the moon moves onto Aquarius – great for innovation. By Friday it goes into Pisces – great for a dreamy weekend. Mercury (communication and knowledge) is in Libra where communication in your relationships is highlighted. Venus (beauty and harmony) is in Virgo all this month a perfect time to tidy up your house and bring practical aesthetics into your life.

Tarot and Art Forecast for Week of Oct. 31, 2021

Happy Halloween. Blessed Samhain to all my Gaelic folk. And blessed Day of the Dead to my Mesoamericans.

The artist this week is Georgiana Houghton @georgianhoughton. Houghton was a spiritualist medium in the 1860’s and 70s. She used watercolors to create vivid and complex abstract paintings. Houghton declared that she was guided by various spirits including family members, Renaissance artists and angelic beings to create these works. She used a color scheme to express characteristics of people and conditions. There is a list of what each color means at her website.

Houghton predates, by 50 years, the “declared” founder of Wassily Kandinsky who started dabbling in abstract painting in 1911, and Hilda Klimt who was painting abstractly five years before Kandinsky. Klimt also declared herself a spiritualist. Does art history need a re-write? Kandinsky even proclaimed in the essay “On the Spiritual in Art”, (paraphrased) that all forms of art can reach a level of spirituality. He often argued that color could be used to paint something autonomous like music. So why can’t the two women before him be seen as artist who paint the soul, the ultimate of abstraction?

Tarot and Art Forecast for Week of Oct. 10, 2021

First I want to thank all of you for reading my ponderings. I just finished my sixth year doing these tarotcasts and I am grateful to all of you. Well here we go for another round….

The artist this week is Fanny Sanin. Sanin explored many art forms, but eventually honed her eye to explore geometric abstraction. She focuses on color and form, but all within boundaries of straight lines and arcs. Her goal is for the viewer to perceive through symmetry and balance an almost “mystical experience.” A place where the composition does not jar or distracts us but narrows our perception. Her work eases the eye while heightening our natural intuition/response. When you go to her website her paintings are grouped by decades and we can see how she went from non-form abstraction, 1962-1968, to this geometric play for the next 50 years. (You can see partially the progress as you scroll down ). In her scope of work the viewer can see not only her journey with color and form but also that this play is endless. Where a lifetime of work does not complete this line of discovery.

Your pondering this week: is this true with all that we do? Are there endless combinations to work with for lifetimes? And if so, what are yours?

However, if you can’t spend the time and focus, something will grow in its place, but you will not know it’s form until the summer of 2022.

Ten of Wands – The Muse of Burdens is here to help you in relieving some of yours. This week there is no way you are going to accomplish all that you need to do. So, this Muse suggest make a list of your todos, prioritize them two ways by ease and necessity, and see where those two lists overlap. Then only do, at most, the top eight. The rest put off until next week. The lesson with this card is not only to get things done but you may find that next week the leftovers might lose their significance.

Ten of Cups – The Muse of Bliss Finding is here with brownies. This energy comes when an emotional restoration is needed. Find or create moments that create bliss each day. Ex: napping with your animal, sitting in a sunbeam, a beverage of choice while sitting still, read a book, stay in your PJs for a day etc….

*Justice – The Muse of Truth appears this week to help you make an important decision and/or search for your personal truth. She asks are you aligned with your higher self and your credos. Now this can go both ways, possibly you need to adjust your actions to align with beliefs or your beliefs need tweaking. This is not a week of right versus wrong. You need to see the grey behind the decisions and find a balanced compromise that does not dilute who you are.

Leo

*The Hanged Man– The last couple of weeks you have been working with lessons around fairness, decisions and how they affect your growth. This week you are in a holding pattern. This energy is aligned perfectly with the last week of Mercury’s retrograde. Whether you spend that time revisiting the last two week’s lesson or decide to tune out, both are beneficial. The challenge is around not being pushed forward when you know the timing, i.e. this week, is not right for moving forward.

Virgo

Ace of Coins – You have the energy this week to start new projects; however, with Mercury in retrograde you are making your life harder if you do. Yes, the early bird catches the worm. But if you go before dawn, the worms aren’t up yet because it is too cold. Therefore, this week instead of jumping into doing, prepare and organize, so you can be the first one out of the gate next week.

Libra

*Empress – The third energy to work with for this coming year is the Muse of Creation. This Muse is big karmic growth energy to work with however, it will take all year to see the fruits of your labors. This Muse wants to co-create abundance and beauty into your life. So first she asks to acknowledge the beauty that already surrounds you. These you want to continue growing. And then she has you ponder what is missing? This year she will help you fill in voids of your garden.

Scorpio

*Strength – The third big energy week for you. The past weeks had the Muse of Opportunity opening doors for you to dabble in new worlds. The Muse of Patience and Moderation advising you to reduce your speed and rebalance. And this week the Muse of Inner Strength has arrived to build your courage, determination, and compassion. So, it is interesting that you can work with all these big energies in the final weeks of your birth cycle, and that they coincide with Mercury retrograde. When this happens, the Muses are trying to get you to tie up loose ends and prep the ground for your coming year. They ask you what do you want to finish up/let go of before your birthday? By dealing with them now, you create space for creation in the coming year.

Sagittarius

Eight of Cups – The Muse of Release has come to help you clean out your closets or send something/person off. This can look like literally cleaning out your space or it can be releasing emotions, situations, persons that don’t jive with who you are. This energy usually shows up to create space for new things, people or situations that will be arriving soon.

Capricorn

Four of Cups – Last week the Muse of Composting came to help review and recycle what no longer serves, by taking the nutrients from the past to grow the future. The Muse of Contemplation continues this theme in the final week of Mercury’s retrograde. Take this week to do ¾ internal work and ¼ external. She advises that slowing down will speed up the process.

Aquarius

Six of Cups – The Muse of Remembering has come to swapp stories of youth and the past. This energy comes around when the past has information for your present. Pay special attention if you feel a Deja Vue or a familiarity. Sit with it, notice all that is happening around you for clues to your download.

Pisces

Seven of Wands – The Muse of Grit has come to help you make a stand or fortify your resolution. She helps by reminding you the why you are dealing with/through the challenges you have control over. Is it for more ease? Better Life? Sense of Security? If you can stand behind why you are fighting, then what seems like a war becomes a quest for your desires
