The artist highlighted is Ledelle Moe.  Moe mostly works in sculpture and installations using dirt, concrete and steel.  Her pieces seem to hold a presence.  They ground us.  Maybe it is the size for some pieces but also her choice of material and process is palpable.  In her words:  “I have been exploring notions of monumentality and the human form through a series of sculpted figures. Created with a process that begins with the digging and gathering of soil from various locales and progresses in the studio through such actions as welding, casting, modeling, and carving, I create these figures in order to open up narratives that speak through both image and materiality…. Also, in play are what have been recurring themes in my work. These are issues of permanence and impermanence, location and dislocation, and place and displacement.”

 

Your pondering:  We are in the midst of summer.  Somedays seem to lazily stretch on-and-on and others are a flash of sunlight and heat. Time has been on my mind a lot lately.  So, this statement, by Moe about her installation Congregation (a series of small concrete heads where she collected sand, dirt and detritus from places she has visited- See Sagittarius below for pic), struck a chord with me and maybe you would like to ponder it too.  “Time is a very interesting shape, it folds, and it weaves and it’s a wave.  And sometimes a circle but its definitely not a line.” 

 

Solar System highlights

We start the week with the moon in Sagittarius – take a wander.  On Wednesday the moon moves into Capricorn – great for all things work related.  On Friday the moon moves into Aquarius with a full moon on Saturday – ponder the stars.  It then moves into Pisces on Sunday August 10th  – daydreaming is the vibe.  Then Tuesday August 12th the moon is in Aries – grab this energy to make things happen.  And we finish the two weeks with the moon moving into Taurus on Friday August 15th– rediscover your senses.

Mercury is in Leo until September 3rd.  Giving us an 11-week crash course in expressing ourselves with the caveat that we don’t shade others’ shine while we spread our own light.  Mars is Libra having us work on collaborations and cooperation. Venus is in Cancer when cuddling and beauty rest become the precedent. And mark August 11th for Venus sidles up to Jupiter this is the best configuration of the year.  Make wishes. Bring in the abundance and changes for the good.

Jupiter, the planet of abundance and growth, is in Cancer until June 2026.  This placement is exalted, because Cancer boosts Jupiter’s positive aspects and vice versa.  Jupiter creates more ease in our emotional growth, intuition, feeling nurtured as well as giving it.  However, the two-fold challenge is that growth needs time to cultivate and may bring growing pains.  So be kind and patient with others and yourself as we grow into our abundance.   Saturn is in Aries until September 1st for its first round of pumping up energy levels. This aspect is about calibrating how you burn your “candle”, so that you don’t burn out while everything is on the move around us.

Lastly, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are in their new signs for a tiny month-long peek into what the next social cycle, potential and places that need change will be highlighted.  Saturn represents structures and institutions, and Aries is about new ways to do things.  Uranus is the planet of revolution, freedom and innovation and Gemini is all things around the mind, information, and communication. Neptune represents our dreams and aspirations and in Aries how to make dreams real.  For society and personally this is the time to investigate new ways of evolving. So, get out your sketch books and draw out a new future for us and the world.

Stella was part of the Precisionist movement and is best known for his paintings of The Brooklyn Bridge.  Precisionism focuses on the themes of industrialization and modernization in the American landscape often using precise and sharply defined geometrical forms. However, as a counter point, he also casts his eye to nature where his paintings become highly detailed and joyfully colored.

 

Your pondering: Stella once said: To refresh and rebuild my chromatic vision I went to the flowers to learn the secret of the vibration of their colors. I often center this pondering around nature, especially for those that are in an urban setting.  Our human eyes need to rest on nature’s composition to rebalance ourselves from the simplistic but precise geometry of squares, corners, triangles of the human city.  So find time to be out in nature and recalibrate your vision.

The artist highlighted is Kawase Hasui.  Kawase was famous for his landscape paintings and prints.  He was part of the Shin-hanga (new prints) art movement in early 20th century Japan. Shin-hanga artists incorporated the impression of light and the expression of individual moods. Kawase’s sunset landscapes and his choice of everyday scenes instead of famous landmarks show how he is capturing a mood more then highlighting the subject.  He moved away from ukiyo-e traditions of emulating hand-drawn brushstrokes, seeking instead to “create works replete with creativity and rich with artistic quality, by avoiding enslavement to hand-drawn painting or old models”

The artist highlighted is Jamil Naqsh.  His work is an intersection of figurative, cubism and graffiti.  He was fascinated by the layering of civilizations, calligraph, women and pigeons, so these are his predominate explorations in his art.

Your pondering:   His friends say that Naqsh was not political but he also said “Not talking about an issue does not deny its existence“.  This week with Mercury in Cancer work on having hard conversations while still being nurturing and loving.  As Mary Poppins says “a spoon full of sugar makes the medicine go down, in the most delightful way”

Solar System highlights

Jupiter, the planet of abundance and growth, is in Cancer until June 2026.  This placement is exalted, because Cancer boosts Jupiter’s positive aspects.  While Jupiter creates more ease in our emotional growth, intuition, feeling nurtured as well as giving it.  However, the two-fold challenge during this time is that growth needs time to cultivate and sometimes this growth brings growing pains.  So be kind and patient with others and yourself as we grow into our abundance.   Saturn is in Aries until September 1st for its first round of pumping up energy levels. Happy Pride month! As we head into summer I highlight the highly colorful paintings of Alonsa Guevara @alonsaguevara. She is a painter, sculptor and installation artist. With her art, she conveys how we humans try to disassociate from nature.  How we often contrast instead of connecting with the natural world.   As we view her work we are reminded of the spirituality of awareness and presence.   As she says: “I am trying to express some kind connection between the natural world and human behavior.  How we are so, in our minds, structured.  We try to make things happen and control things and at the same time nature is something organic, sometimes random, uncontrollable.”  Nature reminds us to grow and go with the flow.

Perhaps also we need to eat a bit of humble pie by not separating, categorizing, judging, this versus that, us versus them, but see ourselves as part of the whole, larger learning organism.  In her words: “When I am surrounded by Nature doing a hike or staring at tiny details, at little fruit that has tiny seeds, and then you realize that life comes from such a small thing.  And there is also the ocean that is huge, and then we are right there in the middle so insignificant…”

Your pondering: Guevara, summer and the celebration of Pride month are all bursting with color, beauty and variety. These weeks as spring ends and summer begins and with Jupiter moving into Cancer, a place it is exalted, an energy that is abundant, giving, and ripe with life, I hope that you can see, celebrate and radiate the beauty and diverse abundance we are and are surrounded by.

Since the dogs had there day and June is Adopt a Cat month, the artist highlighted this Tarot and Artcast is Evgeniya Gor @evgenya.gor.  One of the subjects she photographs is street cats. She explains: “most of the adorable animals in my photos are homeless.”  Not only does she highlight these animals’ plight, but she also carries food to them and supports shelters by donating.  She strives to show us not only the strays’ resilience amidst the harsh winters of Astana but also the vital role animals play in our lives – a way to connect with another living being.

Your pondering: We have four indoor pets, and a variety of hummingbird and bird feeders (which are also frequented by squirrels and chipmunks) in our yard.  And this year I planted a hummingbird and butterfly garden to strengthen my stewardship and companionship with other beings of earth.  How can you increase your stewardship for the cohabitants of the little piece of earth you live on?

Because May 20th is National Rescue Dog Day and I needed some humor, the artist highlighted is Elliot Erwitt. Erwitt is a photographer and film maker.  He is best known for his street photography and wry sense of humor.  He even created an alter ego, the beret-wearing “André S. Solidor” (which abbreviates to “ass”). Self-described as “a contemporary artist, from one of the French colonies in the Caribbean, I forget which one” to “satirize the kooky excesses of contemporary photography.”

Your pondering: I have had a postcard of the above photography by Erwitt on my wall for the past 30 years, and it still makes me smile.  Erwitt once said about photography, “It’s about reacting to what you see, hopefully without preconception. You can find pictures anywhere. It’s simply a matter of noticing things and organizing them. You just have to care about what’s around you and have a concern with humanity and the human comedy.”  This week find some laughter and joy, to help you make it through this chaotic time.

*Hermit – The Muse of Perspective comes when you need to stand back and gain perspective. Body of Earth – The Muse of Steadiness comes when you need to ground yourself before you move forward.   Often, she visits when you are not firm in the reasons why you are doing what you are doing.  And because of your unsteadiness you have plateaued, slowed or come to a stop.  She recommends working with how your body reacts to each brainstorm/scenario. Ie: if you have a pit in your stomach don’t do it.  If your heart beats fast, that is excitement and go for it.

Heart of Earth – The next couple of weeks the muses would like you to see the world like a child filled with inquisitiveness. The Muse of Learning comes when your ego needs to step back, and you need to come at life with an unassuming and curious nature.  However, because of your hubris you cannot see this new information, so it is vital that you keep an open mind.   Yes, we are all lifelong learners but during this time the universe has some intel it would like you to have for the coming months.  For the next two weeks: learn, study and ask questions.

Three of Air – The last two weeks you were challenged to examine your relationships.  Now the Muse of Deep Wounds has come to help heal your heart so you can be more intimate and invested in the relationships that are supporting you.  This Muse reminds you that deep relationship wounds need to be tended consistently until they are healed from the bottom up.  Yes, that does mean you have to continue digging deeper into the pain and its history so you can then slowly heal by executing self-parenting or self-partnering.

Five of Air – All fives represent chaos, and the five of air is chaos in the mind.  The Muse of Ego has come to help you navigate your thoughts  in the coming weeks.  She points out that some of the turmoil that is affecting you is in your environment.  You are allowing it to distract you from your path, because you think you need to add your two-sense into it.  So, she suggests that you do not engage in conflict or discussions unless you are certain you are adding new information or have a solid way to end the skirmish.   And otherwise, it is best to say “no comment” and carry on.

*Death – The Muse of Organic Change shows up when growth is about to happen, but you must first do some composting.  She asks: What metaphorical weeds need to be pulled?  Think of what work needs to be finished before you embark on the next phase. How can I clear space, so something new can grow?  What areas need to be fertilized so that the ground nourishes new growth?   Think of your life as a garden and you are clearing and preparing it for the next planting season.
